When I think of car mechanics I think of greasy hands and dirty overalls. Spanners and wrenches and an array of specialist knowledge. But these paintings are not about car mechanics per se. Rather they speak of car parts on their own as specimens. Here they have given themselves a place, interacting yet ignoring, denying or ambivalent to their function. They are objects that are not created ergonomically to fit in the human hand. They are solid and heavy, made of metals and forged of steel. They exist in the air, hovering, flying or floating and are often seen in landscapes which seem distant or at times unearthly.
Here they find themselves amongst Saint-like figures. The Saints are enigmatic, masked, or alien, as is their relationship to the machines which inhabit their world. Are they items of ritual or is there something miraculous in their presence? Through ritual we come to understand, and to not understand, as if to gain a glimpse before rational thought steps in to cast a shadow of doubt. By allowing this to happen an uncanny narrative emerges thereby catching the painting when it is not looking.
The paintings may speak in terms of science-fiction or of pagan ritual and magic. Or they may speak of the formalities of painting; colour, surface, composition and mark making. Perhaps of prima materia and the alchemical process of transformation. They imply a faith in miracles and of a worship in the ethereal qualities of the Saint and a way to make things impossible seem possible.
