Artist Statement:
I approach each painting as an act of unfolding. Instead of controlling the outcome, I allow the work to emerge through the process, balancing layers of colour and form until the image holds its own ground. I don’t aim to dictate a narrative, rather I aim for clarity and truth in what is revealed. The work is meant to be encountered as it is, leaving the story open ended. I focus on making each painting as vivid and complete as it can be, allowing the forms and colours to settle where they belong. The result is an open space where objects or figures which I find intriguing can play and intermingle.
Based in London, Lisa McKendrick navigates the intersection of visual art and psychological inquiry. Having studied both fine art and counselling, her work acts as a visual exploration of the human experience and the hidden landscapes of the psyche. Her process is one of discovery: she allows images to emerge through layering, balancing internal intuition with the physical world. Central to her practice is a fascination with specific recurring motifs such as: vintage automobiles, mechanical relics, engine parts and emblems from obsolete car manufacturers all within expansive landscapes or interior worlds, which act as anchors for her compositions. The presence of animals hints at the instinctual drive within the work, creating a dialogue between our modern structures and our primal selves. Beyond the studio, Lisa is also an active musician within the electronic music field. She maintains two parallel practices, painting and sound production, that keep her work in a constant state of discovery. These disciplines frequently overlap when she creates and films her own visuals, incorporating expansive landscapes and performative land art as a backdrop for her music. She is equally committed to both fields, finding that the creative energy from one often fuels the work she produces in the other.
